When a body is discovered in the remote depths of the Highlands, DCI Karen Pirie finds herself in the right place at the right time. Unearthed with someone's long-buried inheritance, the victim seems to belong to the distant past - until new evidence suggests otherwise, and Karen is called in to unravel a case where nothing is as it seems. It's not long before an overheard conversation draws Karen into the heart of a different case, however--a shocking crime she thought she'd already prevented. As she inches closer to the twisted truths at the center of these murders, it becomes clear that she's dealing with a version of justice terrifyingly different to her own.

I have been reading Val McDermid mysteries for over thirty years. I always enjoy her characters. I thought this book had a couple of side stories thrown in that, resolved or unresolved, detracted from the police procedural. I still highly recommend this author. Kristi & Abby Tabby

I love books with intelligent characters. Karen Pirie. Her hostile superior, a woman, adds to the challenges faced by Pirie as she becomes involved in solving the 30 year old murder of a man found buried in the peat next to a hidden motorcycle.

Peaty, rather than gritty - a body is found in a bog... Val McDermid writes a ripping yarn with great characters (DCI Karen Pirie is TOUGH!) and very astute observations of human behaviour. We are pleased to be hosting Val McDermid at Christchurch WORD Festival.

Slow getting started, but it picked up eventually. A good beach read.

This is the second book I've tried by this author. Not bad, but not skillful enough to draw me in. It's not high level writing. DNF on page 15.

you know a story is told by a master when it flows so smoothly that it feels like a doddle, effortlessly knocked out by mcdermid when the opposite is probably the case. google search came in handy for the unfamiliar scottish slang and brand names, but what a pleasure this was to read. now I'm craving a gin and tonic...
