Set on Noah's ark after the flood has come, Not the End of the World is a story about survival in dark days, surrounded by intense religious fervor.
It's about a stowaway and a little girl building up the courage to defy her father.
As an adult reader, I appreciated the thought and layers of meaning McCaughrean worked into this story. It's intense and doesn't pull any punches.
Christian readers may have issues with its biblical accuracy and portrayal of Noah and Shem as fairly crazed religious maniacs.
As for me? I thought it a dark story, but with a message of hope at the end. It was a book I needed to read and think about.
