When DI Vera Stanhope finds the body of a woman in the sauna room of her local gym, she wonders, briefly, if for once in her life it's a simple death from natural causes. But a closer inspection reveals ligature marks around the victim's throat and she realizes death is never that simple. When another body turns up, Vera knows that if she and Joe don't crack the case soon, more people are in jeopardy.

Silent Voices. by Ann Cleeves.
After having enjoyed the TV adaption of some of her other novels this is one I haven't seen on the small screen. The TV Vera is gentler, less gritty than her her alter-ego in the novel. But I digress.
This master of murder mystery has crafted another of her tales that keeps you scratching your head until you get to very near the end. My only reservation about this story is that it is so jam-packed with a variety of characters I often found myself a bit at sea about who was who --- especially after a a two day break from reading. Best not to take a break but rather to read straight through. Not at all a daunting prospect.
All in all, a mm well worth reading.

Cleeves keeps the reader guessing who did the murders until she reveals all. She knows how to pace all of the information too. Just when I got tired of following the clues and learning about the background of all of the characters, she moves quickly to put an end to the novel. Another good read, this one about child murders and why that would happen.

Vera will tell you she's not gunning for Nicest Cop Award. She's blunt, frequently to the point of rudeness. But to her credit, is dogged & tenacious in hunting her prey. Vera is not out to make friends, but to solve murders; and she's very good at that!! I am hoping the new television series based on Cleeves' Vera Stanhope books makes it's way across the pond on either TVO or WNED. I believe Brenda Blethyn will make a superb Vera. She is one of Britains greatest actors around.
If you're looking for what I think are reffered to as "Cozies", as in a cozy, mild read by the fire this might not be for you, but read it anyway because it is a very well written mystery.

I enjoyed this and the detective is a quirky character. I see there are DVDs of the tv series Vera based on these novels which should be interesting. I do prefer her stories set in Scotland though.

Interesting protagonist but really long winded plot.

A really good mystery novel. I love Ann Cleeves as an author, particularily her recent 4 books set in the Shetland Islands. This one is a Vera Stanhope book. But you don't really need to have read any of the other books with her as the lead detective. Ann Cleeves does a great job in moving the plot forward and slowly introducing possible suspects. The setting of her books (in this case rural england near newcastle) are always really interesting and different then ones by american or canadian mystery authors. My only critique would be that this novel has a large cast of characters and at times I kept forgetting who was who. Also, there are a lot of english terms that take getting used to but this also adds to the authenticity of the book. A great read for mystery fans.
