wonderful addition to the Scientists in the Field series; beautiful photographs and well-organized; kids will enjoy reading about the tapir along with learning about the different members on the team whose efforts to save this mammal from extinction.

"What is a tapir? According to author Sy Montgomery, it's a gentle, nocturnal mammal that "looks like a cross between a hippo, an elephant, and something prehistoric." In this dynamic, well-researched book, Montgomery and photographer Nic Bishop journey to Brazil, where they join a group of biologists studying the elusive tapir. Readers get an up-close look at science in the wild (bug bites, tapir poop and all), as well as a vivid portrait of the scientists dedicated to understanding and conserving this unusual species."
