From the award-winning author of "Tar Sands", winner of the prestigious Rachel Carson Environment Book Award, and "Saboteurs", winner of Canada's Governor General's Literary Award for Nonfiction. The shocking, inspiring story of an oil and gas industry insider's determined stand to hold government and industry legally accountable for the damage fracking leaves in its wake. In this powerful work of investigative journalism, Andrew Nikiforuk interweaves long-time oil patch consultant Jessica Ernst's story with the science of fracking and stories of human and environmental repercussions left in its wake. This raises dramatic questions about the role of Big Oil in government, society's obsession with rapidly depleting supplies of unconventional oil and gas, and the future of civil society.

Essential reading for anyone interested in our environment,
difficulties of getting governments to apply the law as written/intended.

This is a must read for anyone interested in how the oil and gas industry has hijacked the regulatory process. It shows to what lengths this industry will go to hide the truth of the insidious side of hydraulic fracturing. It's an epic tale of the strength and determination of Jessica Ernst, a modern day hero. This is one of Andrew Nikiforuk's best.

Everyone should read this book, but especially those who are naive enough to think industry and government are on our side. This is Nikiforuk's best to date. Tar Sands was also very good, but what makes this effort stand out is its focus on the incredible, indomitable Jessica Ernst. It also says a lot about media concentration that I'd never heard of this amazing woman. She's better known internationally than she is here in Canada.
