Wow - this was awful.

I usually try to give a show a season before I give up on it, but I only made it about half way with AMC's "Preacher." Based on a comic book, it was co-created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the prolific duo behind such stoner buddy comedies as "This is the End" and "Pineapple Express." While this has humor, it's outside of their comfort zone, mixing religion, the supernatural, gory horror, and gothic noir, none of which really work. I don't mind a show that takes a while to develop, but the creators didn't seem to know where they were going. Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga, who are a couple in real life, star and Negga, in particular, is very good. It's a very different role for her than her breakthough in "Loving." Oh, there's also a character with a mouth that looks like a butthole.

Was a big fan of the comics. I thought the TV series did a pretty good job of taking parts of the source material and weaving it into it's own thing. Some glorious weirdness. I can see someone getting lost if they're not familiar with the characters.

Preacher has been on my radar for some time, but my dislike of AMC's original series like Breaking Bad or The Walking Dead kept me from binge watching it (I know! I have weird taste in television so please don't judge me). I've recently been in the mood for a supernatural, southern drama to hold me over till the premiere of Midnight Texas later this summer (holla at any True Blood/Charlaine Harris fans out there), and Preacher perfectly fit the bill. The show is one of the most oddball things I've seen in a long time, and I recommend going into the show with minimal expectations or knowledge of the source material for maximum enjoyment. Preacher is laugh-out-loud hilarious, full of gratuitous violence, and still manages to deliver a wonderful character study with emotional highs and lows. I never know what is going to happen from episode to episode, and this element of surprise helps keep the show feeling fresh. My only regret is not watching this sooner, as I'm now so obsessed and can't wait to read the graphic novel/source material by Garth Ennis, on which it is based, and check out Season 2.

An eye popping oddball series on a bunch of out-of-this-world personalities in Annville, a small Texas town, with a run down parochial church called "All-Saints Congressional." And among them, there were angels, demons and a wayward God! Amazingly gory but funny fantasy (not for everyone - suggest to check out the article in "Summary" for taste first.)

Many quotes in Wikiquote but not all:

Some one changed the church signs:
From: Open Your Hearts And Souls To Jesus
To: Open Your Ass And Holes To Jesus
From: Repent Because God Is Coming
To: Repent Because God Is Cumming
Blasphemous in finale:

Why do bad things happen to good people?
-Ah, yes. You see, when I created humanity, I wanted you to have everything. Joy, hope, love, but also pain... everything that makes you a person. Do you understand?
But why?
I've been wondering for a long time now... what's your plan for me?
-To be a shepherd to your flock. To tend to them and the church.
But I failed at that. So why did you give me this power if... if I can't use it to save them?
-You have not failed, my son. You brought them to me and so they are saved.
He's... he's missing. God is missing!
