As usual, the late and overwhelmingly talented, Mrs. Catherine Cookson does not disappoint. The Desert Crop is the telling of a story so utterly rich and vivid in characters, plot, surprises, intrigue, tragedy and humor that one is completely transported...and, as I read the last line in the book, I was actually quite aware how sad I felt to have to say 'goodbye' to the wondrous world I had visited. As dramatic as that may read, it is the gospel truth. A Catherine Cookson novel and/or film (yes, some of her most memorable tales have been made into (British) films -'The Fifteenth Street' is an absolutely marvelous novel/film and there are many more -am sure the library has one or two or more!) affects like no magic I have ever seen or heard of - I do not exaggerate when I state .."It will change the way you feel / think...if not for always, most definitely, for a time." By the by, if you do not know of her work(s), do yourself a favor...grap ANY Catherine Cookson novel, your favorite cup of tea (chocolate too, of course, or better still -a scone with lots of Irish butter and jam!) and go to it...time's a wastin'! -you can thank me later. Peace. M.M.
